This light, artificial and buzzing annoyingly, was one of my only comforts down the bleak corridor. They were placed periodically with a few feet of blindness in between.
One, Two, Three, Dark, One, Two, Three, Light. Each footstep left me hollow and cold, even with my arms forcibly hugging my body. The progress wasn't very fast with this damned limp and impaired vision. But how could I resist the reassuring scent guiding me to safety?
Finally, I saw it. A single crimson Lilly on a wall of overgrown ivy. Behind it was rough stone, just like the floor and ceilings. Carefully, I stepped over the vines that had began creeping along the floor and my restraints slipped away.
My hand raised to graze the waxy petal. When it was unsteady, I realized I was trembling. My breath caught as the once lovely flower's color faded to an inky black right under my fingertips. I wanted to pull back, my flinch made the dead soul crumble to dust before me.
I wanted to cry. It wasn't my fault that I wasn't perfect, that I wasn't good enough. It was Fate. And so far, Fate has decided that I'm not worth it's time.
Flames edged at the ivy, licking at the vines and eating their green colors away, leaving nothing but the black snow to fall upon me. I turned away from the vicious demise, just in time to see the glinting blade descend upon my head.

Chapter 1

I awoke to a set of cocoa eyes staring down at me in concern. "You fell again." His voice was thick with accent, but I've learned how to understand him through it. After all, Portuguese is his first language. "Did you see something, or did you just faint?"
"Give me a second." I spoke flatly. "Everything's blurry." Just like after all my episodes. All I could really make out were shapes at this point.
  "One."
  "Oh haha, very funny Rafa."
He shook his head, brown hair swaying under his fedora and gave me one of  his trademark goofball smiles. I still couldn't see straight, but I knew anyway.
He hoisted me off the alley wall, the smile never leaving. "How about now?"
Old grey dumpsters assaulted my nose with rotting meats. "Yes, it's fine. Did I pass out in the middle of the crowd?" We had been walking on a bustling sidewalk before the signs had kicked in. "I hope I didn't draw too much attention." Now, as I think back to it, no one seemed to notice or care. They must have mistook me for a tired traveler.
Or a drunk bimbo, from how hard I was laughing.
Just as I suspected, no one cared that a short redhead had practically died on the sunny California coast. Rafa had just carried me into the alleyway, leaned me against the wall, and stood by my side without being questioned once, not even by the person I almost fell on.
Is LA just that horrible? Or...
I glanced at Rafa's eyes, seeing a faint trace of gold barely swirling at the pupil. Compulsion.
Compulsion is one of Rafael's abilities. It allows him to project a certain mindset or image into someone else's brain. Almost mind control. I remember once he compulsed a whole mall into thinking I was blonde for a day, and another time when he helped me sneak into a club.
Okay, the latter was my idea, but I had to see what all the hype was about.
"What did they see?" My throat was still dry and scratchy.
"You asking me if this was a shortcut. I say Yes and you follow me." He spoke with a smile. "I called you a little sister, no one got the wrong idea."
"Like the time I saw Angy sucking your finger?"
  "SHE BIT ME!"
I smiled at his outburst, since no matter how crazy he can get, I'll always find a way to scare him. "I'll ask her when I see her, okay?"
He shakes his head, as if trying to throw the blush away. "Don't." His voice was stern, but the glimmer in his eyes betrayed him. Hell, his whole body radiated happiness and brotherly-love. To me, I mean. Everyone else would just see a guy with a smile....
Well then, I guess there are a few bonuses when you're friends with a loup-garou. Translating body language.
The guy of the hour must have found his cue, since he strolled in right after the thought floated out of my mind. "Hi, Chris."
He leans against the wall and smooths the collar of his shirt. A bad sign. Rafa and I stare at him, and I almost felt the slight worry rolling off of him in waves.  He wasn't one to just wave off a simple hello, let alone stand there without a word when friends are in earshot.
"What happened?" Rafa spoke for the both of us. His accent grew almost too thick to understand. A sure sign of worry.
Chris turns to us with his emerald eyes, cold as ice. "More have found us. We need to keep moving." He hadn't bothered to hide the growl deep in his throat. "They heard us. Last night."
"But how?" Rafa hissed through clenched teeth. "We were careful. I only took pint!"
Grammar's lost. He's pissed. I shakily grab Rafa's shoulder. When he turns to me, I stared at his mouth in horror before clamping my hand over it. "Calm down! You might be seen!" A soft rustling noise made me turn back to Chris. Oh for the love of the god and goddess...
Chris was crouching. The look in his eyes was going from fear, to feral, and back again.
"Both of you, stay calm. We can't risk it here!" Neither looked at me, Rafa even threw my hand off his face.
  "LOUP-GAROU!  BEBEDOR DE SANGUE!"
Both of them freeze in place as the words fly from my mouth. It feels trivial, but I know it's the only way they'll listen. I felt their icy gazes on my lowered head. "That was a... Risky move, Alice." Chris growls. "What if they heard you? They understand French and Portuguese, you know."
Risky. What a nice way of saying stupid.
"Not my fault. Sometimes you two get so riled up that you're the ones doing risky things." I shrug to voice minor 'IDGAF' right into Chris' brain.  "All I can do is shrug it off or knock you into a loop. I chose the latter."
"Then we walk on." His grammar is improving slightly. And the hiss is fading too. "Go to hotel, pack up, and leave in morning."
Chris and I nod in unison. My chest gave off a dull ache though. We weren't save, and never will be.
Not as long as I walk alongside a vampire and a werewolf.
